Announcing resource-based pricing for Google Compute Engine

Previously, if you used a specific machine type (e.g. n1-standard-4) with four vCPUs for 50% of the month, you got an effective discount of 10%. If you used it for 75% of the month, you got an effective discount of 20%. If you use it for 100% of the month, you got an effective discount of 30%.

Let’s say you were running a web-based service. You started the month running an n1-standard-4 with four vCPUs. In the second week user demand for your service increased and you scaled capacity. You started running an n1-standard-8 with eight vCPU. Ever increasing demand caused you to scale up again. In week three you began running an n1-standard-16 with sixteen vCPU. Due to your success you wound up scaling again—ending the month running an n1-standard-32 with thirty-two vCPU. In this scenario you wouldn’t receive any discount, because you didn’t run any of the machine types for up to 50% of the month.

You began the month running four vCPU, and subsequently scaled to eight vCPU, sixteen vCPU and finally thirty-two vCPU. You ran four vCPU all month, or 100% of the time, so you receive a 30% discount on those vCPU. You ran another four vCPU for 75% of the month, so you receive a 20% discount on those vCPU. And finally, you ran another eight vCPU for half the month, so you receive a 10% discount on those vCPU. Sixteen vCPU were run for one week, so they did not qualify for a discount. Let’s visualize how this works, to reinforce what we’ve learned.

Custom Machine Types

Compute Engine offers VMs in lots of different sizes, but when there’s not a perfect fit, you can create a custom machine type with exactly the number of cores and memory you need. Custom Machine Types has saved some customers as much as 50% over a standard-sized instance.

Preemptible VMs

For batch jobs and fault-tolerant workloads, preemptible VMs can cost up to 70% less than normal VMs. Preemptible VMs fill the spare capacity in our datacenters, but let us reclaim them as needed, helping us optimize our datacenter utilization. This allows the pricing to be highly affordable.

Resources for Preemptible VMs come out of excess Google Cloud Platform capacity. The load on our Cloud Platform data centers varies with location and time of day, but is generally lowest on nights and weekends — the best time to run large Preemptible VM clusters.

We avoid preempting too many VMs from a single customer and, given the choice, preempt VMs that were launched most recently. This might be a bit frustrating at first, but in the long run, this strategy helps minimize lost work across your cluster. And because we don’t bill for VMs preempted in the first 10 minutes, it saves on costs too.

It’s a good idea to retry once or twice, even if you’ve been preempted early. Combining regular and Preemptible VMs in your clusters will ensure that tasks proceed at an adequate pace.

Manage shutdown and preemption notices with a shutdown script that saves a job’s progress so that it can pick up where it left off, rather than start over from scratch.

What if you could run the same, everywhere?

So, how can you swing the power dynamic around so that you, as the consumer of infrastructure, get the most value out of your providers at the lowest cost? Open architectures started calling this approachthose for kubernetes

Applications can run in containers on Kubernetes, the OSS container orchestrator that Google helped create, either managed and hosted by us via GKE, or on any provider, or both at the same time.

Kubernetes ensures that your containers aren’t locked in.

Web apps can run in a PaaS environment like AppScale, the OSS application management framework, either managed and hosted by us via Google AppEngine, or on any provider, or both at the same time. Importantly this includes the NoSQL transactional stores required by apps, either powered by AppScale, which uses Cassandra as a storage layer and vends the Google App Engine Datastore API to applications, or native in App Engine.

AppScale ensures that your apps aren’t locked in.

NoSQL k-v stores can run Apache HBase, the OSS NoSQL engine inspired by our Bigtable whitepaper, either managed and hosted by us via Cloud Bigtable, or on any other provider, or both at the same time.

HBase ensures that your NoSQL isn’t locked in.

OLAP systems can be run using Druid or Drill, two OSS OLAP engines inspired by Google’s Dremel system. These are very similar to BigQuery, and allow you to run on any infrastructure.

Advanced RDBMS can be built in Vitess, the OSS MySQL toolkit we helped create, either hosted by us inside Google Container Engine, or on any provider via Kubernetes, or both at the same time. You can also run MySQL fully managed on GCP via CloudSQL.

Vitess ensures that your relational database isn’t locked in.

Data orchestration can run in Apache Beam, the OSS ETL engine we helped create, either managed and hosted by us via Cloud Dataflow, or on any provider, or both at the same time.

Beam ensures that your data ETL isn’t locked in.

Machine Learning can be built in TensorFlow, the OSS ML toolkit we helped create, either managed and hosted by us via CloudML, or on any provider, or both at the same time.

TensorFlow ensures that your ML isn’t locked in.

Object storage can be built in Minio.io which vends the S3 API via OSS, either managed and hosted by us via GCS which also emulates the S3 API, or on any provider, or both at the same time.

Minio ensures that your object store isn’t locked in.

Continuous Deployment tooling can be delivered using Spinnaker, a project started by the Netflix|OSS team, either hosted by us via GKE, or on other providers, or both at the same time.

Spinnaker ensures that your CD tooling isn’t locked in.

What’s still proprietary, but probably OK? CDN, DNS, Load Balancing File SystemsGluster FS, Avere, ZFSTorus

If your data is in an object store, look no further than the Google Storage Transfer Service, an easy automated tool for moving your bits from A to G.

If you have data on tape or disk, take a look at the Offline Media Import/Export service. You might need to regularly move data to and from our cloud, so take a look at Google Cloud Interconnect for leveraging carriers or public peering points to connect reliably with us.
